It was announced last night that milliner Albertus Swanepoel, darling of the South African fashion set for his international success and right-on hat designs (that may just be me), is continuing his take-over of millinery in the US. He is set to launch a cool new hat line for mass-market retailer Target. 14 different designs, including his trademark African influences like animal print and ostrich feathers, all priced at $19.99. Middle American is about to get a taste of our continent on their bonces. How fun.
His designs are described as "whimsical, fantastical and refined" and there is seldom a New York Fashion Week that goes by without his input in at least three or four collections. He really is a South African fashion success story. A story made good by being prodigiously talented, insightful, observational and an all-round good egg. I happen to like him a lot and am terribly proud of this latest achievement. I look forward to congratulating him in person the next time he is back home.
