In the brilliant bio-pic, Valentino - The Last Emperor, Karl Lagerfeld whispers in Valentino's ear after a show, saying, "That's the way it should be done. Compared to us, the rest are making rags." It was such a stand out moment for me, and truly encapsulated the dying spirit of the haute couture designers.
And now, both of these great fashion majesties have offered up some comment on the newest lamb to enter the slaughter house of the European Royals, Kate Middleton. Being daunted is probably the right response.
Especially when we start with the great Valentino, who says:
“She has to do something with this long hair because that is very important. To be a future queen, she can’t keep her hair this long.”
And what did the Kaiser Karl have to say? Well this was a surprise as he called her 'beautiful and elegant', but don't miss the barbed diss in the midst of the love-fest. Else you will miss the laugh:
"For the royals, apparently the royal blood is not in demand any longer. Better for the generation to come ... She is very different from Princess Diana, and seems a very well-balanced and a happy person. She is chic in a way the position needs. Let's wait and see."
