Lara Stone for W Magazine and Julia Restoin for V Magazine Both in Tom Ford

So we saw Mr Tom Ford's 'Swans' model his new women's collection at the super secret New York Fashion Week presentation, courtesy of Terry Richardson who shot the images for Paris Vogue.
Now we see these amazing images shot for the January issue of W magazine of Lara Stone, model of the year in, for example Beyonce's leopard print gown. Amazing.
The story was shot by Inez and Vinoodah, the current hot photographic pairing who also shot the Moschino campaign in Marrakech.
Following swiftly after that is Julia Restoin (daughter of Vogue Paris ex-editor Carine Roitfeld) with the self same garments for V Magazine, featuring herself. She does have a substantial relationship with Mr Ford, so I guess it is a no brainer. But can you believe the coverage Tom Ford is getting? Unprecedented!
Who did it better. Original Swans, Lara Stone or Julia Restoin? You decide.

Yves Saint Laurent Spring 2011 Campaign

So I also love this campaign for Yves Saint Laurent. The model is a total newbie which is risky and exciting and rare. Her name is unbelievably Arizona Muse and this campaign was shot in one of my favourite holiday destinations - Marrakech. Of course Marrakech is also home to the YSL gardens, so I am assuming that this was the location for the campaign shoot. I adore it's elegance and classic beauty. What do you think?

Moschino Spring 11 Campaign

There is so much about this campaign that I love. First it stars Yasmin Le Bon. Right there, three reasons to love. 1. Wife of Duran Duran. 2. My sort of age. 3. Elegant and stunning.
Second, it is classic Moschino stylish without over kill. For Moschino that is a real win.
And finally it is really, really beautiful. Straight into my references file it goes.

And I'm Off. Some Facts and What Happens Now...

So I am off for my Christmas holidays. I am away until the 10th of January when normal blog service will resume with news, reviews and general discussion about how people are wearing, making and marketing fashion.
In the interim, I have been hard at work to make sure you get at least one post a working day between now and my return. There will be lots of trend alerts, some street style (how we have all missed it - more in the new year) and some general commentary. I hope you enjoy it till my return.
Just for interest and edification, here are some interesting facts about the blog in 2010:
1. Local is lekker. The top clicked posts for the year are Miss South Africa and Jeannie D at the J&B Met.
2. Top global issues are the Royal Wedding Style and Gwen Stefani's appropriation of African print
3. Hottest man post is the one featuring Ian Somerhalder for Vogue Italia
4. Twitter and Google are by miles the most popular links into the blog (follow me on @StyleGuideCT)
5. My readers are South Africans, many living abroad and then some interested parties from the US, UK, Germany, Canada, Portugal and Australia. See the map. All awesome.
Thanks to everyone for your support and community in 2010. I look forward to so much more interaction with you throughout 2011. Be safe. StyleGuide out.

Nothing Says Christmas Like Bad Sweaters - Says WSJ

Apparently this year, da yoof have discovered how hilarious it is to wear ugly Christmas sweaters ironically to parties, reports The Wall Street Journal. And as a result, silly-looking holiday-themed knitwear is enjoying a surge in popularity in the US, with some stores having trouble keeping up with the trend, particularly those located in 'hipster' neighborhoods. Ha!
Can you believe the WSJ is reporting on bad holiday sweaters? But then if you think about it cheesy things are all back in vogue - and there is no party like an old school party, right?
The slightly cheddar Glee cast all wore these jerseys for their official Christmas card, and the Hanson boys donned theirs with equally Stilton-esque grins on their blog. So I guess it is a trend.
It's a bit warm here in good old South Africa for us to join in, but I hope you enjoy the giggle and that you all have MmmBop ear-wigging in your head for the rest of the day like me! Merry Christmas...

Self Indulgent Man-Crush Post of the Year

So this is my one self-indulgent post for the year. (Well, maybe not the only one, but whatevs. Hush.)
I have always believed that style is about charm, good manners, impeccable clothing that speaks to your personality, intelligence, social consciousness, compassion and the classic twinkle in the eye. You simply can't have style without the funny. My fantasy book club entrance criteria start with being a good laugh, include loving fashion and require niceness, manners and empathy - so far only Dannii Minogue, Victoria Beckham and Alexa Chung have made it in.
So what of my men? The few that have turned my head this year can't join the blog book club of course, but do deserve a shout out. So for their humour, twinkle, smarts and conscience, my four picks for 2010 are:
1. George Clooney. Well, obvs. He is The Clooney. He invented this category. He is everything in one. I will heart him forever.
2. Pacey Witter. Aka Joshua Jackson. Consort to Diane Kruger. Deliciousness. A junior Clooney. One day he will grown up to be the next Clooney, but will have the last laugh. You can't really argue with that.
3. Kanye West. Hilarious. Freaking hilarious. And talented. And loves fashion. He is not as great as he thinks he is but he is much, much funnier. I love him.
4. Dave Duarte. Local wild card. Obviously super-smart. Knowledge is power and his has altered this blog forever. Unknowingly funny.
So that's it. Benicio del Toro had to drop off this year. As did my my music men. But probably not for long. Enjoy.

Victoria Beckham's Handbags Sell Out in an Hour on Net-a-Porter

You obviously all know how much I love Victoria Beckham, and her line of handbags is no different. Apparently, however, I am not alone. When two of her six-style collection went on sale early yesterday on the UK site Net-a-Porter, they sold out in minutes. And we are talking £2,277 for the two-tone leather and nubuck bag and £12,500 for the crocodile skin chain bag. Seriously.
I obviously plan to save for mine, but I can tell you it won't be one of these. The rest of the collection will be on sale next week. Well done Vicky!

Last Minute Christmas Shopping? You Are Not Alone.

Heidi, Blake, Nicole and Sienna are all out doing their last minute Christmas shopping too this week. One would think that they would have 'people' to do such things - or at very least online shopping - but no, they to have braved the hoards at the malls to select gifts for their loved ones.
We can all dig deep and do the same. Tally ho!

Write Letters to Haiti for African Supermodel Behati Prinsloo

Our very own African supermodel, Behati Prinsloo is using both her talent and her considerable personality to do good for the devastated people of Haiti, as a favour to her friend and model Coco Rocha. And now it is time for Africa to show our mettle and to reach out to those even more compromised than ourselves. Come on, just write a letter this holiday and spread the warmth and love of our continent. I quote from Coco's blog (OSoCoco)
In our years as friends Behati and I have been on many trips and adventures together all around the world. This January we will be traveling together for a very special reason. Behati and I are again teaming up with Lakay Pam to travel to Haiti with the idea of seeing what more we all can do. We’re going to spend a few days with the orphans and experience their everyday life. While there we’ll film a little documentary of what we encounter so you can see it first hand, where the aid is going and where we still need to help. I have a big favor to ask of you all though, allow me to explain: When we visit the orphanages we want to take with us letters from people around the world to show the children of Haiti that they have global friends, real people who care about them. In return we will be bringing back with us their letters to you all. Please get out your pen and paper today and write a letter for them. If you could, include your name, age and address and send it to us here: Letters To HaitiC/O Elite Model Management, 404 Park Avenue, Floor 9, New York, NY 10016

A Small Matter of "Just Because You Can Doesn't Mean You Should"

So here's the thing. I think that Cameron Diaz has one of the most toned, athletic, smokin' bodies in showbiz. And, as a teenager in the 80s, I worshiped at the temple of the work-out queen, Ms Jane Fonda. I admire them both enormously and respect the choices that they have made in their lives that render them fit and fabulous, no matter their age.
But just because they can show their hot bodies off, does it really mean that they should choose the tiniest, tightest micro-shorts in the world? Or in 73-year-old Jane's case, a leather mini skirt and over-the-knee boots? Hmmmm. I really believe in timeless style and choices with dignity, so I have a problem with these. Someone recently commented that class will always equal style and I agree.
Look how amazing Jane looks in the hot sequin trousers - trendy and age-appropriate and it shows off her honed bod. And for a change, Madge gets it right too - dressing in an amazing coat that looks elegant and on-trend.
But this is just my opinion. What do you guys think? Vote Class Forever or You've Earned It?
PS: I may be a bit tetchy with Cameron due to the fact that she is kissing The Clooney in that pic. But whatevs.

African Models Ajak and Ataui Deng Star in Arise Fashion Editorial

Ajak Deng and Ataui Deng are not related. However, they were both born in the Sudan. They both closed the Lanvin spring show this year. They share a surname and we are told they are good friends, based as they are now in New York. And now they get very up close and cosy in the new autumn/winter issue of Arise Magazine.
Ajak calls Melbourne, Australia home and Ataui has lived in San Antonio, Texas for many years. But both models have had a fantastic year, culminating in this editorial shoot in Paris. I can't wait to see what they accomplish in 2011. Let's all keep an eye on our girls.
John-Paul Pietrus shot the story and the amazingly talented Nigerian stylist Sabrina Henry did the dressing. You can usually get Arise at the larger CNA stores around the country.

Natalie Portman for US Vogue

Sometimes when you are really busy (trying to work out the lyrics to Can't Complain About Christmas and hiding from the Art Director who wants you to come to her pool party), all you want to see are pretty images that make you happy.
In the slow news week just before the holidays, please have a look at these ethereal images of Natalie Portman in a story for the January issue of US Vogue called Spreading her Wings. The story is shot by Peter Lindbergh and styled by Tonne Goodman.
Freaking beautiful.

I Can't Complain About Christmas With Love From Burberry

The digital masterminds at luxury fashion brand Burberry have come up trumps again this Christmas. Teaming up with Razorlight front man Johnny Borrell, they have this delightful viral Christmas card for the season.
And, not only that, but every time it is sent on to others, a donation is made to the Burberry Foundation, a charity dedicated to helping young people realise their dreams and potential through the power of creativity.
The performance is country-esque and made all the more enjoyable by watching Johnny try and keep a straight face. It is called "Can't Complain About Christmas" and is courtesy of the luxury brand's in-house music label, Burberry Acoustic. Proper funny.
So go on, forward to all your friends and bring real Christmas cheer to everyone.
With thanks to Burberry

Dannii Minogue Celebrating Summer in the Southern Hemisphere

It's not often you come across your style icons (and fellow book club members) in summer togs at this time of the year, so it is a lovely treat to see Dannii Minogue back home in sunny Melbourne looking spectacularly radiant in her red maxi. Maybe something Country Road minght do?
The story goes that she is already broody, based on that bottom image, but I reckon that a gorgeous squidgy baby is going to make anyone smile like that. No, the story is that dress. Super-excellent mate.
Please note I used my best Aussie accent throughout this post.

Another Royal Wedding Watch: Zara Phillips Gets Engaged to Mike Tindall

So I have a soft spot for the latest royal to get engaged. Whist living in England I had the opportunity to work with Zara Phillips a couple of times. It was sports-sponsorship related so we were on her turf rather than mine to a large extent, but I will say that in my experience she is passionate, engaging, risk-taking and a dab hand at managing the paparazzi. Probably not the usual descriptors for a member of the British Royal Family.
And now she is set to marry the man she met on the eve of the 2003 Rugby World Cup Final, in which he played and won, Mike Tindall. The combination of royalty and rugby-royalty is certainly a first for someone 12th in line to the throne. But it seems to make sense - especially after seven years together and the fact that Zara is an Olympic athlete herself.
Having been denied a royal title by her mother (with which she is more than happy), she has gone on to win an OBE from her grandma, the Queen, for her sporting prowess. And Zara is certainly a jolly-hockey-sticks attractive young woman.
But somehow this has consistently failed to play out onto the red carpet. Zara has looked lovely on many occasions, but never totally put together. In fact, I would go so far as to say, that Zara looks best in her dressage kit, on a horse. There she looks like a queen.
And so all I am going to say about this latest royal engagement photo is nice ring, shame about the puffer.
PS: I tried to dig up my own paparazzi photo that was published in the UK Now magazine as I walked with Zara at an event a few years ago, but couldn't find it anywhere. Probably best. I was going through a 'countryside' phase in my wardrobe.

Shopping With Alex: Silk Shirts

I can't believe it has been seven weeks since I left lovely Cape Town for freezing London! Since then, when the weather allows, I have been on the look out for a great silk shirt. A current fashion favourite and perfect for all seasons, a silk shirt should be a staple in our 2011 wardrobes.
First some background on why these garments are currently such hot property: The very glamorous label Equipment launched in 1975, and introduced men's shirts into women's wardrobes the world over. Inspired by stylish women like Katherine Hepburn and Lauren Bacall, Christian Restoin's shirting label was an instant hit with the fashion elite. Equipment has now been relaunched this year by Serge Azria, Creative Director of Current/Elliott, and the iconic Equipment silk shirts have become a classic piece.
As my current budget doesn't allow me to get an Equipment one, I was determined to find another option. So here are my best picks from the London high street:
 1. Reiss - this is a gorgeous silk shirt and my favourite. It is also available in a lovely soft grey and I really like the detail on the shoulder - a great point of difference.
2. Massimo Dutti - this is the best value for money. It has lovely detail, great fabric and also available in a fashionable orange/mustard colour.
3. Topshop - this is a great affordable high street option. A looser fit, classic colour and great for the office or for the weekend.
4. Whistles - this one is beautiful and similiar design to the Equipment shirt. The fabric is very luxurious and is also available in camel, khaki, and burnt orange. Perfect.
Happy shopping for something similar in CT and I hope you are all enjoying the Xmas season.
Warm regards from London!
Alex xx

Alberta Ferretti Uses Real Women for Next Catwalk Collection

The first designer to be taking a leaf out of Mr Ford's latest women's wear book is Alberta Ferretti. The designer will base her women's show at Pitti Uomo on 11th January in Florence on "real women" by recruiting her own muses to model for her. We already know that 24-year old, actress and gorgeous ingenue Camilla Belle will be there, but the rest are more surprising. Inés Sastre is both an actress and a dazzling Spanish beauty, but she is well into her 30s. And of course Carmen Dell'Orefice (above left) and Marisa Berenson (middle) are both well past the age that we dare to ask a lady her age, yet immaculate and elegant as anyone who has ever walked the ramps.
But I think that the idea that these are just a few headline grabbers and that the real bulk of the collection fo 30 limited edition looks will be paraded by really ordinary folks including a lawyer, a blogger, a psychologist and a scientific researcher is what is a lot more interesting.
"My muses are always the women of today. I wanted to show my outfits on women, not only on models like in Milan," said Ferretti. "This show will be about women and not only the clothes. I wanted to personalize it."
I do think that it is only fair that we point out that of course designers like our own David West has used only real people in his shows for years. It is not a new concept. But it is one that works.

Royal Wedding Style Watch: A Dress Update and Other Stuff

Just a quick update this morning for all you Royal Style watchers (including me):
1. Apparently the "all bets are off, the dress is definitely by Bruce Oldfield" reporters are wrong. Latest insights indicate that the dress will indeed be made by a younger, more 'fashion' designer as I requested in my own Royal Wedding Style report a couple of weeks ago. No one knows, of course who it is, but if reports are to be believed, the dress is currently being crafted inside Buckingham Palace.
2. The black and white silk dress that Kate wore this weekend is by Temperley London. Truly and without hesitation one of my favourite designers. And one of my suggested designers for her dress. Just saying.
3. And finally, the Royal Collection just released its official commemorative china for the upcoming nuptials, which includes a plate, cup and pillbox (Royal Collection Shop) ranging from £25 - £40. Each item is decorated with the couple’s initials, the Prince’s coronet and the obligatory wedding date. And since these are official, William and Kate had to approve the design before they could be sold - probably the reason why they are tasteful and don't have their faces plastered all over them. Shop, shop, shop.

How to Wear Sequin Trousers This Festive Season

I know that it is the festive season and therefore any amount of spangle involved in your outfit is permitted. So when you decide that you need to break out the sequin leggings or trousers this year, let me give you some time-honoured guidelines to ensure you look both joyous and stylish.
1. In everything, balance. If you are going for a legging or narrow fit trouser it is essential you balance them out with a heavier boot and blouse. If you keep the whole silhouette narrow, you will look both dated and enormous. So please. Do us all a favour. Ta.
2. Maintain proportion. With a harem trouser, make sure you have a lighter top half and make sure the horizontal is slightly higher than usual to elongate your legs - in other words try not to look like your legs are 5 inches long. That would be an error. You understand.
3. Modernise with a wide leg. The most fashion forward silhouette is characterised by a wider trouser leg, so if you can, use this with your sequin trousers too. It really is the most flattering shape as well.
4. Channel Joan Collins. If all else fails, there is a hard and fast rule of thumb when it comes to deploying sequin and that is to ask yourself: What. Would. Joan. Do. and all the answers will be yours. Have fun.

Royal Wedding Style Watch: Prince William and Kate Middleton Attend Charity Event

This weekend Prince William and Catherine Middleton made their first joint public appearance since the engagement. The couple attended The Thursford Christmas Spectacular in Norfolk, an event staged to raise funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust.
So let's get right to it. The outfit, I mean.
I like the silk dress in monochrome with the looser fit black jacket. So far, so accessible-trendy. Her hair looks glorious, of course. And everyone knows I am a sucker for a dress with a built-in bib neckpiece. I have two major concerns, however. Are we ever going to get Kate out of her middle class sheer pantyhose? C'mon man! They are so aging and, like, blergh. And, I do think that we need to see a bit of colour and print. Kate looks magnificent in jewel tones and it is befitting a future princess, so let's see it, love. Awesome. Good chat.

Are the Beckhams The Most Stylish Family in the World?

Last night the worldwide institution, the BBC, held its annual Sports Personality of the Year Awards ceremony in Birmingham. The mighty HRH David Beckham was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award and was resoundingly praised for this - it isn't often the British public unites in agreement over a celebrity or sports star.
But what struck me was the tightness of this family unit, the very demonstrative love they all have for each other and - most importantly - the individual style of each member of this young family. It makes me ask, could this be the most stylish family in the world?
I say Kardashians eat your heart out.

Michelle Obama Wears Vintage

In the first ever known instance, Michelle Obama, US First Lady, wore a vintage gown to film the "Christmas in Washington" special TV show last week. The dress is black with a lace overlay from the 50s and it was designed by Norman Norell and sourced from a well-respected vintage store called New York Vintage.
While little known these days outside fashion circles, designer Norman Norell (1900 - 1972) was one of America's most influential mid-century designers. His simple but stylish clothing was known for its exquisite construction, timelessness and glamour, back in the day. His studio was like a mini-Paris in the US at the time. New York Vintage co-owner Jon Schneck says,
"Other dresses from the archive have been scheduled for use by the First Lady later this year. We are truly honored that the First Lady has chosen a gown from New York Vintage as her first venture into vintage couture."

Angelina Jolie's Monochrome Press Junket for The Tourist

Golden Globe nominee Angelina Jolie (accompanied by Brad Pitt who seems to be going through something of a sartorial mid-life crisis - the less said the better), has been out and about the first world premiering and promoting her new film The Tourist this past week.
In every single stop, she has worn black, cream or a combination of these. She has looked, to varying degrees, great, fine and in one case dreadful. And there is no question, the woman needs to flesh out a bit to get back to her best. However, let's celebrate the classic, timeless monochrome looks that really worked for her on this tour. Designed mostly by Atelier Versace, Angelina Jolie is known for sticking t what she knows works for her. And when she does that, she looks amazing.
Just for the record, I hate her enormous 90s fringe and love the second look where it is integrated into the hair - I think she looks radiant. It needs a campaign, that fringe.

Gwyneth Paltrow Almost in White Emilio Pucci Lace-Up Dress

There really isn't much to say here. Amazing. Brave. Bold. Sleek. Incredible.
To nit pick, the shoes should have been nude. That's all.

Diane von Furstenburg Tells All About Her Iconic Wrap Dress as She Releases Pre-Fall Collection

I have been a fan and an 'investor' in Diane von Furstenburg for some years now. She now goes largely by the initials DvF, such is her iconic status in the fashion world. As the first designer to truly understand how to include comfort as standard in her women's wear - and my much loved pockets - she invented the suits-everyone wrap dress back in the 1970s. She now tells us that it was inspired in part by President Richard Nixon's daughter who was doing a talk wearing a skirt and a matching little tied up top.
This essential wrap dress is very clear and present in the new pre-fall collection for 2011 - with strong echos of the 70s legacy DvF carries.
DvF has recently appointed a new designer; Yvan Mispelaere, and this collection really reflects his aesthetic, merged with the trend of "Seventies Mom" also seen in Chloe and Celine this year.

Friday Fashion Face-Off: Anne Hathaway and David Beckham

ANNE HATHAWAY
Robyn: So the Princess Diaries is hosting everything right now it seems. And something as illustrious as the Nobel Peace Prize concert it just the latest. So here Anne is in J.Mendel black shimmer. It is pretty classic and a bit sexy. And she looks really pretty. I’m just not sure that she is really a credible choice so that bothers me a bit. What do you think Marco?
Marco: Well, she has taken on more serious roles since the Princess Diaries, thankfully. To me it makes sense. I have always believed her to be one of the relatable and intelligent starlets in Hollywood and have enjoyed every one of her red-carpet looks. Not only because she is always ravishing but because she exudes class at the same time. Plus she has a bigger smile than anyone in Hollywood. Even Cameron. Thumbs up for this one.

DAVID BECKHAM
Marco: I have an incredibly supportive and loving father so when I saw this picture I knew it had to be my pick of the week. I appreciate a father who gets involved. David took his son to the Sun military awards in London and dressed him all up in Brooks Brothers. I must say the pair look rather dashing. Davids overcoat has a superb fit. Still all that said, what is going on with the middle path there, Becks?

Robyn: Ah, no fair! You know I love all things Beckham and here is a double dose of the cute. I can even overlook the hair since you know it is just going to change again in a couple of weeks. I can't wait for next book club so I can ask Vicky what she thinks of it! Totally and utterly adorable for Becks big and small. Marco, you win this one.

Trend Alert: The Little White Dress

It seems counter intuitive that in the depth of the coldest winter the Northern Hemisphere has had for decades, the little white dress (currently a summer essential) has made a super-strong trend appearance. Over the past week Gwyneth Paltrow, Michelle Williams, Jessica Alba and Kirsten Bell have all scored big  in the style stakes with their own versions of the little white dress.
I love Gwyneth's lace ladylikMonique Lhuillier version that she wore to receive her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. I am less keen on the shorter, poufier versions - but that is just my personal taste. Which is your favourite?
What I also thought was very interesting was that both Michelle and Kirsten wore the purple satin heels to their premiers. Three times makes a trend so whomever spots these same heels a third time gets trend spotting credit - StyleGuideCT readers: On Guard!

Nicole Richie - Two of the Marchesa Wedding Dresses

I am sure, like me, you have been somewhat subconsciously excited about seeing what TV star and fashion design Nicole Richie wore for her wedding. Reports of three separate Marchesa dresses have circulated widely and now we have some proof. Germany's In Magazine has published images of all three, two of which you can see here.
They had images of the first, Grace-Kelly-inspired gown that was the one she wore to walk down the aisle.
The second looked like a black and silver beaded creation with a spider-web detail on the shoulders and back. And the third is this slim fitted, lace, back-less number that she wore for the reception. I absolutely adore the head piece that goes with it.
These are dresses that exceed all my expectations and look exquisite. Very well played Nicole, and all the very best wishes for a happy family life together.
UPDATE: thanks to Sylvie's eagle eye, it turns out that the slim lace dress is in fact the same as the original pouf dress, minus the waistband and skirt. Which makes the slim lace dress dress number two and the black sparkly one as going away dress number three. Phew!

Elle Fanning Rocks The Red Carpet in Couture - And She is Only Twelve!

I struggled a bit in deciding whether or not to do this post. First of all it is an array of utterly stunning - and mostly appropriate frocks. All are couture. All are beautifully worn and accessorised. This is unquestionably a young girl who we, as fashion followers, need to look out for. She is utterly flawless in her ability to carry off these garments and hasn't put a foot wrong. And she has her own opinions and views on what she wears too. This is not 100% the work of a stylist.
And yet, this girl is 12 years old. She is Elle Fanning and she is promoting a Sofia Coppola movie called Somewhere.
I decided that fashion needed to be the winner here, and she (and her family) have chosen this life of limelight so it is only fair. But I would never in a million years put an ordinary 12-year-old girl on a blog because it is just a bit creepy.
One of my most precious people in the world is 12 years old. She is a child. She is certainly blonde, blue-eyed, smart and can dance - just like Elle. But she is also just a child. And wouldn't have a clue, despite my best efforts, who Valentino is. Nor would she care. But Elle does and has worn of late the following (from left to right) Azzaro, Marc Jacobs, Valentino (twice) and Rodarte. Seriously.

Giles Deacon Socks for Christmas - A Gift You May Actually Like?

No one wants to open their gift from their granny or whomever and find socks inside. Long the cliche of a bad gift, my genuine fashion crush, Giles Deacon, has reinvented this poor garment and made it somewhat desirable all over again just in time for Christmas.
Here at O Magazine we quite like a cute sock and have recently shot a story featuring them, combined with ladylike kitten heels (see March issue). And these - designed for Happy sock - are adorable. To truly experience the 'joy of socks' Giles advises you wear ankle socks with your heels too. We are as one G and I. Sigh.

Women of Substance on January Covers: Gwyneth Paltrow on US InStyle and Amy Adams on US Marie Claire

Gwyneth Paltrow is the star selected to cover the special 200th issue of US InStyle magazine with a fold-out cover. Photographed by Michaelangelo Di Battista, Oscar winning actress is channeling her role in the film Country Strong, soon to be released - and so wears a strange combination of cowboy and spangle both in the story and on the cover. But I will say this - these photographs are as pretty as those stand-out ones taken by Mario Testino years ago and says much for her healthy living approach. Go Gwynnie.
Also on a January cover is gorgeous and talented actress Amy Adams (if you haven't seen the movie June Bug - do yourselves a favour this holiday). Having had a baby just seven months ago she was the chosen one to cover Marie Claire in the US - also I would guess in support of her much nominated movie The Fighter, for which Amy won a Best Supporting Actress Nomination. Congrats on both - what a year.

Mr Tom Ford's Swans include Beyonce, Julianne Moore, Lauren Hutton and Stella Tennant

Here are some images of Mr Tom Ford's 'Swans', his muses that he invited to walk for his super-secret first women's wear collection in years back in September at New York Fashion Week. What is new to this collection of images, is the first look at Julianne Moore, whose image was not leaked along with the others last month.
As the only sanctioned photographer at the catwalk presentation, Terry Richardson captured these pictures of the Swans. From a tailored white suit sported by Seventies supermodel Lauren Hutton to a glimmering gold frock wrapped around Beyonce, the collection oozes Ford’s signature ultra-feminine disco sensuality.
The fact that each look is totally different from each other is testament to Mr Ford's assurance that he designed and tailored each piece to suit the muse wearing it. Each is thus totally individual, holding together only by the strength of Tom Ford's relentless aesthetic.
Each model muse was photographed in the bespoke garments they modeled for the Ford-edited issue of French Vogue, out this month.

January Jones Is This Year's Versace Blonde Says Donatella

You may have already seen these striking images of TV Mad Men star January Jones in the buff for Versace accessories 2011. What you may not know is that she was cast because the collection was inspired by the sixties - most appropriate as her famous role inhabits this time period so elegantly. And...
"I am always on the lookout for the next Versace blonde," said Donatella, "and in January I feel I have found a perfect Versace woman for the twenty-first century. She is chic and elegant but deeply sensual too - it is a 'dramatic' combinat."
The campaign images shot by Mario Testino under the creative direction of Donatella Versace, are a nod to the iconic Lewis Morley portraits of Christine Keeler shot at the height of the Profumo affair scandal in 1963 which saw Keeler pose naked with only an Arne Jacobsen model 3107 chair to protect her modesty.
Jones, has a strategically placed Versace bag instead, but the hair, make-up and lighting in the striking black and white photos conjure the moment perfectly for the modern age.
Versace and Jones first met on a shoot for US Elle magazine last year and struck up a firm friendship which led to Jones sitting front row at the Versace show at Milan Fashion Week, wearing Atelier Versace to the 2010 Emmy Awards, and the pair hosting a charitable dinner together at London's Connaught Hotel to celebrate the launch of Central Saint Martins 20-20 Fashion Fund.

Rachel Bilson Demonstrates Dior for the Younger Set

I know that there are many of you out there who believe that Rachel Bilson can do no style wrong. And while I am a cautious fan of her look, I do actually think she has had more misses than hits recently. But then she goes and does this. Pulling a couture runway look out at a video gamers collective, of all places. And hits a home run. This is great from hair to nude foot.
And this is Dior. Dior has a reputation for being red carpet appropriate, dazzling spectacular pieces, and, well, older. But this dress, even with the addition of the flesh lining, is youthful, beautiful and totally event-appropriate. Even if that event was the Spike TV 2010 Video Game awards. Although, what was RB doing there, surely one needs to ask?
PS: She did actually also wear this same look to the William Rast for Target shopping launch earlier in the evening, just in case you feel like I may have got the event wrong. But I am less confused by her attendance at that one.

Style Blogger The Sartorialist Tells All on NYT Video

The New York Times is running a short series on fashion bloggers and they have released a video of Scott "the Sartorialist" Schuman. I have been following his blog for close on five years now, and I have to say the following: He takes such beautiful pictures. And even though the pictures have become a little samey after all this time, I still go every day and appreciate the images - although I am less excited about uncovering something or someone new these days. Just saying.
Fundamentally, blogs are personal, and Scott Schuman himself is the point of The Sartorlialist as he explains in the video - we are just peeking in through his window. And I am so glad we have been allowed to do this for the past five years. I would never have started my own blog had it not been for his.
In the little narrated video montage of his work, Schuman explains the process starts when he asks someone to pose for a picture because they look so great. "That rush of kind of embarrassment comes off, you know, beautifully," he says. "I mean that really is the beautiful feeling — they feel so flattered." Schuman adds that he doesn't intend to report on clothes. "I'm trying to capture it in the romantic way that I see it," he continues. "The abstract idea is much more important than what people are wearing."  Interesting approach and it does really help to understand his perspective.

Sylvie Says "I'm Sorry" and Gives You The Gift of The Smoky Eye

Right, so first, I ask forgiveness... While I have been swanning about smiling and waving, suffering death-by-canape and generally wrapping up the year I've left you the blog readers most awfully in the lurch...
A catch up.
* I love our new Miss SA Bokang Montjane
* I am completely obsessed with Kate Middleton – who bears an uncanny resemblance to Audrina ‘Ceiling Eyes’ Partridge, don't you think? (in a good way)
* And I just cant feel the love for Carey Mulligan’s face to rival the outpouring of desire for her wardrobe. Sorry.
* I cant wait to see Black Swan and have rekindled my love affair with ballet, in its honour, by enrolling at a local ballet school which teaches the Vaganova Technique. So fancy.
But, far more importantly here is, my Christmas gift to you:
THE SMOKY EYE
I know – you can send gifts later honestly this is the most ridiculously most asked about make up look. EVER.
1. Rim lash line top and bottom, inside and out with a soft pencil in black, deep purple or sparkly brown – depending on what the intensity is that you’re looking for. And I mean RIGHT IN the lash line in-between your lashes with no gaps. Feel free to scribble – its not important at this stage to keep things neat.
2. Using a cotton bud, smudge the liner to break down the wax of the crayon and get a looser and softer edge
3. Now, and this is critical, dip a small brush into a corresponding powder (i.e. black for black liner, brown for brown... you get the picture) and continue to scribble into the smudged area setting the greasy wax pencil... It is essential that you do this to prevent your eyes from sliding down to your chin. Tap off residual powder and work with TINY amounts to blend and set the crayon – work from the inner corners blending outwards and remember a little goes a long way. Blend the outer edges and top line away into nothing... Remember, this takes elbow grease and practice. The make up is just the tool... You have to do the work
4. Clean up any fallout below your eyes and add concealer if necessary
5. Finish by curling lashes and applying as much mascara as you can possibly manage!
Voila
And
You can also go over here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZ-dczsh03M... To see my brand boyfriend James Kaliardos show you his way, in a video, in his soothing dulcet tones! (his technique is totally different – but listen to him say BLEND!)

Royal Wedding Style Update

Obviously, like all fashion media I am keeping a watching brief on the developments around William and Kate and the pending Royal Wedding. And goodness, there seem to be developments every day, new information, new rules.
I know, for example, that at some stage we are going to have to start calling Kate "Catherine" and even "Princess Catherine" and eventually, one hopes, if they make it that far "Queen Catherine". But then I remember we managed to go from Lady Di to Princess Diana without too much trouble so we will man up.
Yesterday it emerged that Miss Catherine Middleton did her own styling and make up for her engagement photos, delving into her own wardrobe for her year old items and rejecting those supplied by hopeful stylists. You all know I have a real thing for young women who do their own styling, and considering she got it so RIGHT, I may need to invite Miss Catherine Middleton to join book club some time. Just for one get together, obvs.
Also in the news is that these two looks by Reiss and Whistles will be re-released for those wanting to buy a bit of Catherine's style.
Bad news on the fashion front is that T-shirts bearing the images of Prince William and his bride-to-be have been banned as part of a royal edict that declares what kind of memorabilia is acceptable to celebrate their  wedding. And everything that is allowed must only use approved images and carry the words, "To commemorate the marriage of Prince William of Wales and Miss Catherine Middleton, 29th April 2011." Got to get going on that batch of commemorative headscarves - an item fully approved by the Palace.

Katie Cassidy Wins Best Dressed at Controversial Hollywood Style Awards

It was only fitting that the winner of the Women's Style Icon Award at the Hollywood Style Awards on Sunday night was the best dressed guest at the event. At an event widely ridiculed for everyone looking a hot mess on the night, Melrose Place (II) alum and new Gossip Girl, Katie Cassidy looked elegant and impeccable in black lace, floor sweeping, Edition by George Chakra. I hadn't actually thought much about this young woman, even though I religiously watch her Melrose Place every week, but I am definitely keeping a style watch on her now.
Far more controversially, I actually loved the mint maxi and white tee that Kate Bosworth wore. I am probably in a minority of one here as the bloggersphere is awash with ridicule for this Jil Sander creation, however, I am going to stick my neck out and give it a big thumbs up. I mean it has pockets!
Obviously I need your input. Comments please - is it a Katie win and Kate miss, a Kate Double Hit Header or a Kate Say What to Both?

Rashida Jones Style - Is She One of Us?

Despite being the daughter of music mogul Quincy Jones and a successful comedic actress from the American The Office and the utterly brilliant Parks and RecreationRashida Jones is not a household name here yet.
She is definitely knocking on the door of the A-list and yet keeps herself low key - and she works hard at her craft. Not for her the usual path of daughter-of-music-legend.
And it has recently occurred to me that her style reflects this and stays perfectly suited to this position. She is a comedienne but has avoided the pitfalls of quirky dressing (take note Sarah Silverman). She is a successful actress but has chosen to keep things a bit organic. No super-high-gloss, more of a Cameron Diaz hair approach. And yet she is unmistakably chic. Unavoidably stylish. Someone that we could conceivably emulate. Accessible. Approachable. Authentic. Possibly one of us?

Pantone Colour of the Year for 2011 is Honeysuckle - Here's How to Wear It

Those cool colour guys at Pantone have named the colour of the year for 2011 and it is Honeysuckle. No, that doesn't mean yellow, sadly. It means a sort of pinkish red tone.
It is a pretty colour and one that will actually suit quite a broad spectrum of the population so, for your assistance, here are a selection of ladies wearing the colour to show you how you too can embrace it and be on trend in 2011.
Just remember. Everyone can wear every colour (we are NOT the colour wheel police), just pick the shade to wear next to your face that suits you best. So if you are the 15% of the population on which Honeysuckle looks aging, never fear, just embrace it in a skirt or bag or an awesome pair of shoes. Job done.

Oprah Supports Local Fashion Down Under

This year Oprah Winfrey, one of the most influential women in the world and my uber-boss, has looked amazing in new fashion designer Victoria Beckham and that made me super-happy. Now she is down under in Australia for two of her last shows in their current form and she has chosen to support and promote a local designer by wearing her garment to attend a 'Welcome to Sydney' party.
The soiree and dazzling fireworks display in her honour was held at the city’s Botanical Gardens and hosted by New South Wales’s premier Kristina Kenneally. Then pyrotechnics lit up the night sky, and concluded the show with the lighting of a giant red O over the harbour bridge.
Dressed in a stunning kaftan by Australian designer, Camilla Franks, Oprah's outfit was meant to resemble one of the city's iconic birds, the Rosella.
Let's just hope that the next time Oprah comes to visit us here in South Africa we can persuade her to select from one of our local designers for her appearances. Can you imagine? Who do you think would be the best choice for an Oprah outfit?

Bokang Montjane Crowned Miss South Africa 2010 at Sun City

After months of searching, scouting and selecting, the new Miss South African 2010 has been crowned and she is the very beautiful Bokang Montjane.
A life-long pageant participant, Bokang has several titles to her name and knows how to turn it on when it counts. Hopefully this will stand her in good stead as she competes internationally as the SA representative. Let's see some titles being brought home this year.
I was very happy with the standard of the last 12 young women. They were all exceptionally intelligent, groomed, well spoken and any of them would have been an excellent ambassador for South Africa. They walked well (none so well as the lovely Anja, of course) and they carried themselves with as much dignity as they could muster under the circumstances.
It really does need to be said, however, that the amazing opportunity for celebrating South African fashion designers was well and truly missed. Labels Jenni Button and JJ Schoeman was the best we could muster for this international-standard production? With the greatest respect, the fashion talent in this country is so much better than this. With the exception of the well-fitted (but less than what he is capable of) swimsuits by Dax Martin, everything else looked cheap, nasty and dated. There was nothing on-trend, nothing truly sumptuous and glamorous, nothing celebrating South Africa, nothing fresh and new. As they would say, an Epic Fail! What a pity.

Prince William and Kate Middleton Choose High Street Fashion for Official Engagement Portraits

The first official images of the newly engaged Prince William and Kate Middleton say more about them as a modern couple than any amount of Palace commentary.
Much has been made already of the warmth and obvious affection that they show in the pictures - most unusual for official Royal portraits. However I think the signs go deeper.
First of all they chose Mario Testino as the photographer. He is a fashion photographer, popular and hip around the globe. They are tapped into this. In addition he also shot the most accessible and naturally beautiful images of Princess Diana shortly before she died. The choice of MT as the official photographer is very modern and exactly what the celebrity culture of the UK would appreciate.
And secondly the garments they are wearing in the pictures are good old high street fashion. Certainly on the upper end of the high street, but chain store choices never the less.
In the delightfully cuddly first image, Kate (or Miss Catherine Middleton) is wearing a blouse from Whistles with her jeans. I love Whistles and they have had a massive fashion turn around since Jane Stephenson (ex-TopShop) took over. An excellent choice that is both fashionable and chic.
In the second image, minimalist dressing is fantastically on-trend. This cream dress is from Reiss, the first choice for elegant and quirky work wear for young Brits.
Brilliant choices. Glamorously democratic and accessible. Is Kate the next Michelle Obama for fashion?

It Girl Friday: Victoria Beckham in Her Own Design

We usually see Victoria Beckham striding through the airport or shopping with her boys in tow. We seldom see her at a red carpet event - she is far more likely to be dressing the guests than one of the guests these days.
So it is great to see her in one of her own designs, looking amazing and with just the right amount of dress-up/dress-down flavour that she spoke about at her presentation at New York Fashion Week.
I love the embellished shoulder and that this lady walks the fashion talk.

It Girl Friday: Natalie Portman Goes Blonde for NYT

It has been quite a month so far for Natalie Portman. Her new film, The Black Swan, has been premiering all over the place and she has been turning up on the various red carpets, looking amazing and serene and beautiful - to much critical acclaim.
The fash-pack love this movie because the costumes were designed by the Rodarte sisters, who it is rumoured could be up for an Oscar for their efforts. And so quite a few column inches and photo opportunities have been seized for Ms Portman. And the fashion industry is quite giddy about her right now.
The latest media coup is the cover of this weekend's New York Times Magazine. On Sunday, the residents of NYC will wake up to a blonde Natalie Portman, especially for their mag. She looks incredible, it needs to be said. But personally, I always feel a bit inadequate in light of her beauty, talent, social responsibility and activism as well as her apparent grace. So I was a tiny bit happy to see her looking tired and cross at the New York premier earlier this week. So she is human! And then I felt bad for being so mean. Sigh. Still not quite as human as I.

Friday Fashion Face Off - Dame Helen Mirren and Um, Darren Criss?

DAME HELEN MIRREN
Robyn: I worship this Dame. In her 60s, as sexy as hell and impeccably dressed. A class act as they would say. I particularly like the clean line maxi skirt and gold belt combo which is very, very contemporary, without losing any dignity. The plunge of the lurex top is decorous and yet festive and age-appropriate. Seriously. How could this be better?
Marco: Well you have said it all haven't you? She embodies all that is class and sophistication while looking quite hot indeed. Just imagine the glitz and fun we could have with the real queen. Probably minus the plunging neckline, of course.

DARREN CRISS
Marco: I could have chosen a 'No Doubt'-er or Ryan Gosling again but this boy really stood out for me. For those of you googling his name, he's on Glee. I just love the fit of this suit, the sharp lapel, the simple bow-tie and the fact that he combined it with those shoes! It's precisely what I would have done. Even if you end up saying they look like bowling shoes Robyn I don't care, because it's a lovely look.
Robyn: Oh relax, dear, I love the shoes of course. They are a classic and I adore the way they are worn in and he may have actually been hoofing in them for years. What a treat. The suit and bow tie is good too. It’s just that this strange wee chap looks a bit sweaty. Like a good shower and eyebrow wax wouldn’t go amiss. Just saying.

It Girl Friday: Carey Mulligan Covers UK Elle January 2011

On this blog we have had our eye on 25-year old actress, Carey Mulligan's style for a while and we often feature how she is wearing the latest designers. Maybe I need to explain to some of you why she has piqued such interest.
1. She is not afraid to experiment with edgier designers and unknowns;
2. She has an unrelenting idea of what her fashion boundaries are within this - which is extraordinary for someone so young;
3. She always conducts herself with dignity, while being quirky and interesting, not dull;
4. She is a jolly fine actress and, as I have said before, real talent is always stylish;
5. And she says things that just make me want to invite her to book club, like:
"I've never felt like a sexy person… I’ve always felt like a sensible person. I’ve always felt absurd wearing anything revealing. Having Botox? So I can’t move my face? Isn't that the antithesis of what I'm trying to do as an actress? Only in LA would someone try and give you Botox when you're 25 years old."
You can catch a full interview in the January issue of UK Elle (she is on the cover) and find out more about this intriguing, best-dressed actress.
