Last night in Lagos, Nigeria, the 2011 ARISE Magazine Fashion Week Awards took place. Followed by a set by Tinie Tempah, which I really wish I had been there for. Sigh. Sadly, not. But I was really, really excited about the award winners. They included some of my favourite African designers, including Ituen Basi, Tiffany Amber and Jewel by Lisa.
They also included the award for Model of the Year, which was won by Tanzanian, Flavinia Matata. Flavinia used to be a beauty queen - representing Tanzania at Miss Universe - the first girl to ever compete with a shaved head. But she has, of late, secured some prestigious editorial work and we will watch out for her in the months to come. Congratulations to all the African fashion winners.
