The Storms

So Cape Town has been battered by storms this weekend. If you ventured out from your home, you would be met with gale force winds and snow on high lying areas. If you live anywhere near the sea, 8m high waves have been pounding the beach front.

I am assuming that this is the reason why I prowled the malls for more than eight hours this weekend and found not one single person to photograph for the blog.

Let the weather clear up quickly, and let's get style back on the agenda. Please.

Amy wears a simple statement t-shirt and earrings, turning a casual outfit into a stylishly casual one. A Style Guide "well played" is in order.

Fundudzi Instore Now

Yay! I am really excited about the new Fundudzi collection - by the very lovely Craig Jacobs - being in store now at Blackbeard & Dare around the country.

It is a beautifully simple collection of eco-friendly pieces, embedded in, and inspired by, the unique natural environment of Africa.

Shown at Joburg Fashion Week, the clothing is all completely wearable and accessible. There are lovely dresses and skirts and t-shirts. And then there are some shorts and blouses as well. Fabrics are as organic as possible and there is also plenty of use of the sustainable fabric made from bamboo. Bamboo has a comfortable and luxurious feel to it while looking much like a jersey knit. It also drapes beautifully on the female form, and is thus both flattering and comfortable.

And with any garment that you buy that has been made from bamboo, a proportion of the proceeds from the sale will be donated to charities associated with The Trust who support charities and causes that work to the benefit of the African continent.
Beautiful and worthy, what more can you ask for in a collection of designer clothing.

TV Killed the Blogging Star

Or something like that... Apologies for being (and continuing to be) relatively quiet this week. I am working on a very exciting new fashion TV project as the scriptwriter and this has been taking up all my time - and then some - recently.

Called African Couture, it is SA's first fashion-related magazine television programme and it is going to be a fabulous look behind the scenes for any and all of you who are interested in fashion and style. Produced by those very same lovely folk at African Fashion International who brought us Audi Joburg Fashion Week, MTN Durban Fashion Week, Virgin Mobile Cape Town Fashion Week and Joburg Fashion Week last month.

But I urge you to tune in to SABC3 at 6.30pm on Saturdays from 6th September. Go on set your PVR now!

As a sneak peek, the first episode will feature a model casting held at The Runway, and you can see blog favourite, Leonie, doing her thang.

Sanlam SA Fashion Week Kicks Off

For those of you in Johannesburg, head to the Sandton Convention Centre over the next few days to experience the Sanlam SA Fashion Week. This is a different set of designers showing their Spring Summer 08/09 collections to those we have already seen in Durban, Joburg and Cape Town already this year.

With some of my favourites in the line up, I am looking forward to the regional collections - in Cape Town on 18th September and 25th September in Durban.

Kluk/CGDT, Amanda Laird Cherry, Coleen Eitzen, Lunar and Abigail Betz would be the shows I would make a bee line directly to.

We all know how difficult it is to get the dress code 'smart casual' just right - for both ladies and gents. So here is a pice I wrote explaining where it originated from and what it means - and how it differs from informal and business casual. Click here to read it in full.

Cindy: De Waterkant

Cute floral dress - perfect for Spring/Summer 09 - but worn here with the layering to make it work for the sudden chill in the weather. It is from Mr Price so totally affordable. Also seen on a certain fashion editor at the Virgin Mobile Cape Town Fashion Week last week.

This is a useful piece I wrote as a guide to buying vintage pieces to make your wardrobe more individual. You can read it in full if you click here. I hope you find it helpful.

Red Scarf - Cavendish

Having recently lost the best scarf I have ever had, I am obsessed with finding another great one to replace it. This red scarf looks fantastic, especially as the one accessory with this simple pared down black shift dress and tights.
If anyone does find my green scarf, please let me know...

Woolies Launch New Summer Ranges

You probably would like to see some of the new stuff on offer at Woolies for summer this year. I must say, I am heading there myself today to spend some dosh I don't have on a couple of irresistible pieces. Like this amazing yellow dress with asymmetric neckline and beautiful pleating on the back.

Totally Gratuitous: Janez Goes Topless

It started out so innocently - Janez modelling the new men's wear range for Woolies. And then it all went so horribly right as the shirt came off, just so we could all see the excellent workmanship from the inside of the garment, you understand...

Would any of you believe me when I say it was his charm that was the most attractive thing about him? It was, honest. And charm is so very stylish.
PS: that is the lovely Emma Jordan giggling coyly behind Janez. More of her later...

Spotted: Jo-Ann Strauss

Hosting the Woolies launch event last night, Jo-Ann was turned out in some of the new summer range. Great dress for ladies who are small on top and a bit bigger on the bottom half. Great shoes. For everyone.

Sylvie - Cavendish

I have known Sylvie for years, but we haven't seen each other for a while. It was lovely to catch up with her last night when she was doing the make up for the Woolies new summer range launch. The make up was beautiful, with gorgeous light pinks and peaches really evocative of the long sunny days to come. More on the launch later.

Young Designer Profile: Nazir

In the middle of last week I saw Natalie Becker wearing this dress. Needless to say she looked fabulous, but we were too busy chatting and it got too late to take a photo of her in the dress. I did ask her who it was by, however, and as luck would have it, I got the opportunity to meet Nazir the designer, a few days later. There seem to be a few ladies around town who are lovin' his work and feel fantastic in his clothes. For me, this is always the mark of real style and talent.

News: MoneyWEB Life Article on Style Identity

Here is a quick piece that I wrote for MoneyWEB, discussing the issue of having a South African Style Identity. While this is only my opinion, I feel pretty strongly that we don't need a set of rules imposed on us. Although someone really does have to do something about a nation who feels that Crocs are where it's at. Click here for the full article.

Darkie Concept Store - TK

This is Thokozanie, a model and manager of the brand new Darkie concept store that opened this week in Kloof Street. Situated inside cool furniture store Eddie Zoom, Darkie's concept store has all the pieces from the runway show held last week as part of Virgin Mobile Cape Town Fashion Week. If you didn't get to go along to the show, you can go and check it all out now in the store.

The collection in currently in production and, by next week, you should be able to look and buy.

TK is wearing one of the stand out pieces from the collection - a denim safari jacket with the signature Darkie comb logo. Hot for this season.

TK modeled in both the Darkie show and the legendary Stiaan Louw show at fashion week. You can go and check him out in the store as well...

Young Designer Profile: Cotton Mob

I met Jessica Aronson a while ago as she works part time in Callaghan in Cavendish. I had no idea then that she was a designer. But that she is. She makes beautifully hand crafted, versatile pieces for young women such as herself. Because everything is made so beautifully, it is excellent value for money - so head to Portfolio in Loop Street where she is stocking her range this month.

In this photo she is wearing one of her little dresses, cleverly done in navy blue and black. A colour combo used this season by Diane von Furstenburg - and my favourite Stiaan Louw.

Young Designer Profile: Chimera

This is Bekky Beukes from Durban-based label Chimera. Having shown successfully at MTN Durban Fashion Week earlier this year as part of the young designers collection, Bekky is now relocating to Johannesburg to grown her business. En route, she stopped off in Cape Town for the Baileys Fashion Weekend.

Bekky makes all her clothes by hand, using organic materials where possible.

News: Mail & Guardian on Maya Prass & Stiaan Louw

The piece that I wrote for the Mail & Guardian on Maya Prass and Stiaan Louw's shows for Virgin Mobile Cape Town Fashion Week is now online. You can click here to go and read it in full. Although, of course these are my own photos of the pair designers extraordinaire.

Front Row: Finale of Virgin Mobile Cape Town fashion Week

The last of the stylish visitors to the Virgin Mobile Cape Town Fashion Week - may I call your attention to the second photo which features Chris Wagner, another of Stiaan Louw's muses, and his lovely lady friend.

Spotted: Loyiso Bala

Spotted at the finale of Virgin Mobile Cape Town Fashion Week, very stylish singer, Loyiso.

Front Row: Maya Prass

Spotted: Members of the Press

Emma Jordan always managed to evade my camera lens - but not today... Together with Michael from Elle and the ever dapper Neil from Men's Health.

Front Row: Virgin Mobile Collection

Spotted: Liezel and Nicky

Two of my favourite TV ladies for both their style and graciousness - Liezel van der Westhuizen and Nicky Greenwall - both in the front row of Virgin Mobile Cape Town Fashion Week on the last night. Liezel is wearing David Tlale (she is, promise!) and Nicky is wearing a gorgeous Topshop frock.

Front Row: lovewaterlove

Helga and Vista, PRs extrodiaire, both dressed by David Tlale.

Baileys Fashion Weekend - Fall 09

Elizabeth Galloway students have produced a line of men and women's wear for autumn winter 09 and are selling it at the Baileys Fashion Weekend - now only one day left!

Baileys Fashion Weekend - Arnold

Great men's jacket - almost a modern day safari jacket.
